About Schumacher Camera

Shoot in the Midwest? Then you’ve probably heard of us.

Established in 1991, we’re a Chicago-based motion picture and digital camera rental house with a reputation for meticulously maintained custom camera packages. We specialize in 35mm/16mm/DV and HD camera packages, lenses, accessories and support.

We were founded upon the concept of providing cinematographers with extremely reliable, well maintained equipment in order to allow them to focus upon their craft.

This concept has served us (and our clients) well. Today, Schumacher Camera is Chicago’s premier motion picture equipment rental house. Our equipment is used for commercial production as well as documentary, independent film, feature projects, and music videos. (See recent credits.)

Our attention to detail, coupled with a reputation for fastidiously maintained equipment, has allowed us to build longtime relationships with our clients.

Our Service
Dependable! Reliable! Thorough! Ask around. That’s how you’ll hear clients describe the service at Schumacher Camera.

Our staff of skilled, dedicated professionals has practical industry experience. In fact, the Schumacher staff is probably the most experienced in the Midwest. We know how the equipment is used. We know what production needs are.

Your requests are followed through, and your equipment is ready as promised…when you need it! All gear is thoroughly checked — both before you come in (prior to the prep) and upon return after the rental. So you can proceed to your film shoot confident that the equipment you’ve chosen is reliable.

But just in case (because some things are beyond our control), we’re available to you 24 hours a day. You always have technical access to our staff, regardless of your production schedule. Whether it’s a question you need answered or an additional piece of equipment, we’ll make sure you get what you need.

If you really want to know about our service, ask our clients.

"Despite the spur of the moment request, I got exactly what I asked for. Schumacher was slated to do support. The gear was shipped in from out-of-state. But when an Arricam ST arrived broken, Mike ended up repairing it instead.
No hassle. They made the job simple and clean. I would come back!"

"The Schumacher team is incredibly conscientious. They did a great job of putting the camera packages together and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed, even coming in at 8:30 p.m. on a Saturday night to wrap the equipment."
David Morenz, 2nd Unit 1st AC on Warner Bros. Television The Fugitive episodic

"They (Schumacher Camera) were more than helpful. I'm not sure the project would have been successful without their assistance. When the going got tough, they were right there with us."
Cinematographer Keith Gruchala on filming Beyond The Soul
as quoted in
American Cinematographer, September 2002, A Healing Discovery in India by David Heuring

What Makes It Work
It works because rather than being “about us”, it’s “about you” – and the tools you need to do your job well. We take care of the equipment. So you can concentrate on the creative process.

Supporting Our Community
Giving back to our production community has always been important to us. We do that in several ways.

We offer internships to qualified individuals who are at an early point in their careers in film and want to develop their skills. After completing a full internship, many of our interns have entered the production world, well-rounded and equipped with the requisite skills to compete in the industry. Armed with Schumacher training, they are now ready to take the next step to becoming camera assistants.

While internships are important, our goal is to help our seasoned professional clients. That means training our DP and AC customers on new gear that we bring in to Schumacher Camera. It also means working with a client on how to use any piece of equipment that may be new to him or her.

We also offer a variety of educational seminars. These include producer seminars where assistant producers can become familiar with the equipment cinematographers will be using. Other Schumacher seminars provide individual hands-on training and manufacturer demonstrations.
